Notes for THOMAS J. CARRUTH:
Information taken from notes of Beverly R. Smith. Thomas left his four children with Absolm L. Stovall, a brother of Cynthia Ann and apparently went back to Walker County, AL where he may have owned land. Thomas ' whereabouts was unknown by his family for many years until he was found in the Marion County AL, US census residing with 2nd wife and two other children in 1860. In 1852 Absolom L. Stovall moved his family along with the Carruth children from Lawrence County AL to Tupelo, MS. He was a minister and took caare of his sister's children until their adulthood.

He was inducted in the Army on March 15, 1942, trained at Fort Mcpherson Georgia as Combat Engineer. Embarked on October 22, 1944 and served in European Theatre with engagements at Aredennes; Rhineland; Central Europe. He earned medals, European Threatre Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars; American Service Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal; Victory Medal. He served during WW II for a total of 44 months and was discharged on December 15, 1945 as a Private First Class. In 1953 he moved his wife and family to Rock Island, IL where he worked at the Farmall Plant until his retirement and then returned to Lamar County AL.

The following was taken from The Lamar Democrator the Lamar Leader.
Grim tragedy struck Saturday night September 15, 1973 after a Pee Wee football game here. An explosion at the game's concession stand claimed the life of Kevin Ray Carruth.
When the game was over and most of the crowd had dispersed, the boy's father, Freddie Carruth, went into the concession stand to turn out the lights. He had been coaching one of the teams. According to school officials, there apparently was a gas leak to a stove in the concession stand. As Mr. Carruth pulled the electric switch, an explosion occurred. Kevin Ray and his mother were standing outside the concession stnad and falling blocks from the building fell on Kevin causing his death. The boy's father is confined in the Guin Hospital with burns. Mrs. Carruth was not injured.
The young boy's grandparents are Mrs. Harrison Gosa of Vernon and Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Carruth of Sulligent.
Kevin was a kindergarten student at Sulligent.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p. m. at the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Ministers were Rev. Otis Palmer and Rev. James Walden. Norwood-Brown Service of Guin directed burial in the adjoining cemetery.
