Lamar County Kin

Evans Family Cemetery is located about 5 miles northwest of Sulligent, Alabama in northwest Lamar County. Two acres of land was donated for the cemetery. Today the actual cemetery only covers about 0.5 acre plus. There are 105 graves, of which 24 sites are not marked. These are believed to be early members of the family or people who lived and worked for the Evans family.

In the spring time or fall, the cemetery area is very beautiful, nestled on a hill surrounded by trees just off county road 35 or Lost Creek Road . The cemetery is very well groomed due to local persons in the community that are related to the Evans Family. When W. W. and Sarah Evans King , W. Earlie Evans, Robert Carden and others were alive, they made certain that the cemetery area and all the graves were ready for the annual decoration day. Years ago, relatives would meet at the cemetery in the afternoon, on the second Sunday in May, sing hymns and then a preacher would deliver a short sermon while everyone was standing around in the cemetery.

It has long been a tradition to decorate all the graves in the cemetery on the second Sunday of May. This became the ‘Decoration Day’ for the cemetery. Many of the graves have long since had anyone of their family to decorate their grave, but the ladies in the community see that at least one flower is placed on each grave. Lula Bell King Woolbright, whose mother Sarah Evans King, was the granddaughter of Thomas Evans, who moved his family here from North Carolina in the early 1800’s, carries on the tradition today, set by her mother, to place at least one flower on each grave.

A cemetery such as this, is unique, but I can think of no better ‘resting place’ than on the top of a hill overlooking where your ancestors, lived, worked, and worshipped . If you go to the cemetery on a quiet day, sit and breathe the country air, and look out over the area, I promise you , it is almost as if you can see them just as they were years ago, working their crops, taking care of their families and being neighbors to each other. ( Remember I told you in the first "Lamar County Kin", that I have a bad case of this genealogy bug! I enjoy cemeteries! ) Below is a listing of the Evans Cemetery:

Queries for the week:

Dear Barbara,

I am looking for missing links on my Sandlins. I have information that

people have told me that some of my Sandlins lived in Sulligent. Lamar Co.

Al. I am looking for John W Sandlin and Arminta (Mintie) Garrison, I am having probems locating them. John was born about 1825.

Thank you

Dorothy Ballenger

Dear Barbara,

When I was a student at West Texas State University, there was a man who

worked at the college who was named Paige Carruth. My grandmother and he

were distantly related in some way. They had lots of fun talking about

old times and family in Lamar County, AL. I would be interested in knowing how they were connected and whether you have any connection to Paige.

My grandmother was Maggie Almarine Chandler Hankins

Her parents were John Calhoun Chandler and Judy Abigail Hill

Her grandparents were Martin Anthony Chandler and Lucy A. England and

Henry Thomas Hill and Martha Caroline Woods

All the above were in Lamar County, AL and are buried there except for

my grandmother who is buried here in Amarillo, TX.

I enjoyed your homepage very much.

Mollee Puckett

If have any information on the above queries contact me at 205 698 9427; P. O. Box 579, Sulligent, AL 35586 or email coco @ fayette.net. Suggestions for this column are welcome.

Helpful Hint: Transfer your jelly to a small plastic squeeze bottle. No more messy sticky jars or knives. This also works well for homemade salad dressing.

See you next week!
