The following was taken from The Lamar Democrator the Lamar Leader.

Grim tragedy struck Saturday night September 15, 1973 after a Pee Wee football game here. An explosion at the game's concession stand claimed the life of Kevin Ray Carruth.

When the game was over and most of the crowd had dispersed, the boy's father, Freddie Carruth, went into the concession stand to turn out the lights. He had been coaching one of the teams. According to school officials, there apparently was a gas leak to a stove in the concession stand. As Mr. Carruth pulled the electric switch, an explosion occurred. Kevin Ray and his mother were standing outside the concession stnad and falling blocks from the building fell on Kevin causing his death. The boy's father is confined in the Guin Hospital with burns. Mrs. Carruth was not injured.

 

The young boy's grandparents are Mrs. Harrison Gosa of Vernon and Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Carruth of Sulligent.

Kevin was a kindergarten student at Sulligent.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p. m. at the Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Ministers were Rev. Otis Palmer and Rev. James Walden. Norwood-Brown Service of Guin directed burial in the adjoining cemetery.
