Sgt. Stamps, a native of Columbia, Louisiana, lived in Marion County before moving to Fayette, and was a member of three consecutive state championship football teams at Marion County High School, in Guin, Alabama. After having participated in the rescue and emergency treatment of the survivors, when Guin was destroyed by a massive Class 5 tornado in April 1974, Mike found a life-long interest in emergency medicine and began formal training as a EMT. After moving his family to Fayette, he was employed as an EMT. He then joined the Fayette County Sheriff's Department as a reserve deputy before becoming employed as a jailor at the Sheriff's Department.
Sgt. Stamps joined the Fayette Police Department, as a Patrolman, in July 1981, and soon graduated from the University of Alabama Law Enforcement Academy. Sergeant Stamps has remained a certified and practicing EMT Intermediate throughout his years in law enforcement and serves this department as EMT trainer and coordinator. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, in December 1985 and serves as a shift supervisor. He is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and served for several years as Chaplain of Fayette County Lodge #74.
Michael was appointed the Department's first (and only) D.A.R.E. Officer in 1993 and has received intensive training for that role. Each school year, he instructs all 5th, 7th and 9th grade students in the schools within the City of Fayette, in ways to avoid drug abuse and violence. Michael serves, both on-duty and in his private life, as a very positive role model for the youth of our community.

In 1993 the City of Fayette implemented the D.A.R.E. Program in the Fayette Elementary School. Sgt. Michael Stamps was selected to be the D.A.R.E. Officer. Sgt. Stamps started this program in September 1993
The program went over so well, that Chief Hardin along with the local school board, decided to expand the program to the 7th grade at Fayette Middle School and 9th grade at Fayette County High School.
Sgt. Stamps works with the 5th grade one day each week, throughout the fall semester and January. During the spring, he spends 10 consecutive school days with each 7th grade and 9th grade class, reintroducing the training the students have previously received, as they reach different school environments and levels of peer pressure.
Over the past years, the City of Fayette has shown its commitment to the youth of this city by continually providing what assistance we can offer to them. During the summer, Sgt. Stamps annually attends certified D.A.R.E. instructor retraining to stay affront of the best possible ways to help our youth.
