Wilson Lake 5-15-14

Wilson Lake was the site of the Fayette Bass Club's May 15, 2004 tournament. Wilson Lake is located on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama, and is known for some of the state's best bass fishing. The only problem is the 15 inch size limit. You can land 50 to 60 bass in one day and you might not have a single keeper. Wilson Lake is an excellent place to take a young person who is just starting to bass fish. He or she is almost guaranteed to catch or hang a fish on this body of water. Although you catch fish all day, it can get frustrating when anglers can't put them in the live well and take them to the weigh-in because of the size limit.

Keith Smith and Bart Lindsey from Tuscaloosa didn't seem to mind the 15 inch size limit. When they pulled up on their spot they boated nine bass exceeding the 15 inch length that pushed the scales to 21 lbs. even, earning them first place. They managed to catch these fish in less than one hour on big plastic worms.

Coming in at the number two position was John Shepard and George Kizzire from Fayette. This team found one stretch of bank that was loaded with keepers and used buzzbaits to land seven bass weighing 13 lbs., 4 oz.

Shepard also had the heaviest individual stringer with five bass weighing 11 lbs., 4 oz. earning the Top Gun Angler for the tournament.

Finishing in the third place slot was Mike Whitt and Jeff Norris from Tuscaloosa. Spinner baits were the only lures this team needed to boat this nice string of bass sending the scales to 12lbs., 15 oz.

Taking home the money for the largest bass of the tournament was Rusty Henry from Fayette. Henry used a four inch worm on six pound line to boat this nice Wilson Lake smallmouth that weighed 4lbs. even. He hooked into this big bass with only five minutes left to fish. Every bass fisherman knows a smallmouth in this weight range with a bad attitude on six pound test line can not be hurried to the boat. When Henry finally put this fish in the boat he only had about one minute to spare.

Congratulations to all the winners at Wilson Lake. Next month the Fayette Bass Club will head to the Tombigbee River to fish the June 19th tournament, leaving out of the Vienna Boat launch
