Lay Lake '04
The Fayette Bass Club traveled East over to the Coosa River to fish Lay Lake for their eight tournament of the season. This tournament would have normally been fished on the September 18th but was moved out a week to the 25th due to the raging winds and rains of hurricane Ivan. Be it as it may, 39 fishermen with 21 boats did manage to show up at Beeswax Landing to compete although we were not alone as there were a few hundred other boats there as well competing in other tournaments.
This kind of fishing pressure really put a tight lip on the fish during the day but not too tight for first place winners, Justin Nichols (Tuscaloosa) and Ferrell Ledbetter (Buhl) with nine fish weighing 16 lbs even.
Coming in second place were Rusty Henry (Kennedy) and Jessie Sanders (Fayette) with a seven fish sack weighing 14 lbs 4 oz.
Bringing up third place stringer were Danny Mitchem (Berry) and Jerry Sheldon (Berry) with a nine fish weight of 12 lbs 10 oz.
The Big Fish honors went to Rusty Henry for a 4 lb 4 oz spotted bass.
Jeff Norris (Northport) captured Top Gun trophy for the heaviest individual stringer with a five fish limit weighing 11 lbs 10 oz.
Congratulations to all! Tournament stats are at 83 fish weighing nearly 128 lbs with only five (5 fish) limits. This is below the potential that Lay Lake normally has in producing quality fish. The October 16th tournament will be at Mitchell Lake (Higgins Ferry) just down the river from Lay.
